Case history: Suchi, a 35-year-old woman employed in the banking sector, was suffering from grade 3 obesity and was facing challenges in her weight loss journey in her work-from-home setup. Several years back, she successfully shed 20 kgs through a program. However, she regained it subsequently. After that, she made multiple attempts to lose weight, viz. following her earlier regimen, going to various nutritionists, trying diet fads, etc. Not only was she unsuccessful in losing weight, but she started to gain more weight and also developed other health complications such as thyroid and PCOD. This made it even more challenging to lose weight. So, this time, she wanted to lose weight sustainably, reverse PCOD, and control hypothyroidism while ensuring that all her health parameters were within the safe zone.

After analysing her food diary, we realised that her diet significantly lacked optimum protein despite being a non-vegetarian. Her iron and ferritin levels were low due to her making random food choices, eating empty calories, snacking on high-carb meals and having low protein and whole food intake. Her diet was dominated mainly by carbohydrates and few vegetables; the biggest challenge was low portions. There was no fixed time for eating, which caused hunger pangs and cravings, leading to poor food choices and overeating. To tackle the protein deficiency, we started her on a meal plan that included one portion of protein in each meal. We also suggested that she take vitamin B12 and D supplements to ensure she was getting enough nutrition while losing weight. 


We included vitamin, mineral and antioxidant-rich food in her diet to support her low vitamin scores. We had whole grains as the source of carbohydrates and fibre. Considering her hybrid work schedule, a tailored meal plan was provided for her workplace, emphasising balanced meals from whole grains and protein intake. We educated her on differentiating between physiological and psychological hunger and strategies to handle both kinds of hunger. Guidance on making healthier choices while eating out on weekends and strategies to balance it the next day was provided. To enhance physical activity, a regular walking routine was suggested, with the aim of gradual improvement. Real-time monitoring and support were provided. We taught her how mindfulness helps her indulge in her favourite food even while enjoying social gatherings, various occasions, and travelling.



Result:

With our nutrition support and guidance, she lost 10 kgs in 3 months, including a 4-day vacation. She was able to sustain the weight she lost even after her vacation. She can now choose her foods wisely and manage her health even with a hectic routine. Her energy levels and washroom cycles improved significantly. Her overall health parameters got better. Her cravings have decreased considerably, and she has also started understanding her body better and making conscious, nourishing food choices.
