CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Dimple

Gender: Female

Location: Australia

Case history: Dimple, an IT professional living abroad, was suffering from severe IBS, thyroid, gastritis and bloating. Over a period of time, she lived on only curd rice and a few soft vegetables. This made her feel weak and tired throughout the day, thus making it difficult to work and take care of her family responsibilities. She was on thyroid medication and was taking antacids for gastritis. Hence, she was looking for a sustainable approach which would help her reverse gastritis and IBS and also allow her to eat more variety of food at home and outside of home.

Approach by the best nutritionist/dietician in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, Deepika Chalasani:

After analysing her dietary recall, we prescribed her a multivitamin, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and digestive enzyme-based supplements, as she had stopped eating food due to her fear of gastritis episodes. We saw that her diet had long gaps, triggering gastric issues. We gave her coconut water and weak buttermilk with mint and ginger in between her meals, relieving the bloating she was constantly facing. Furthermore, her meal included fermented grains such as idli and d, causing severe bloating two hours after the meals. Hence, we designed a personalised plan for her, executed step by step, to provide a sustainable approach. First, we introduced supplements and eliminated fermented foods and trigger foods. Then, we replaced her meals with soft-to-digest non-fermented grains like oats, ragi, and quinoa, introducing every new food one at a time and in small quantities to check for comfort. Once she was able to consume small portions, we increased the portions of the grains. We gave her soft-cooked vegetables with rice or the cereal that she was comfortable with, along with Greek yoghurt, as it is a probiotic.

We introduced gut health healing food like hemp milk and kefir in small portions and later increased it once she was comfortable. We also gave her LOW FODMAP fruit. Slowly, more foods were introduced so that she could get variety and optimum nutrition. Healthy fats such as date seeds, paste, and nuts were included. Good quality proteins which are simple to digest and gut health healing, such as bone broths, soy yoghurt, etc., were suggaested to induce satiety in her diet. Local and seasonal fruits and vegetables were incorporated. Soups, salads, stir fry and curries were given to increase her vegetable intake. All her meals were balanced with appropriate macronutrient ratios to support her gut health and manage IBS. Continuous monitoring and guidance were given so that her journey remained smooth.

Result: Within a few months, all her IBS-related symptoms, such as acidity, bloating, and gastritis, disappeared. She was able to consume a variety of foods without any discomfort. She now does not need any medication to manage IBS. Recently, she travelled to India and could eat all her favourite foods without discomfort.
