Case history: Avantika, a working professional, had a desk job, which led to a sedentary lifestyle. After getting married, her life got busy juggling work, family, and her little one. She was eating healthy homemade food and avoiding takeouts or junk food. However, she gained a significant amount of weight and couldn't understand the reason. She started following restrictive eating patterns to lose weight but ended up feeling lethargic, faced mood swings and disrupted sleep. Even though she would work out for hours, she would only see an inch of loss, but the weight on the scale wouldn't change, which further contributed to her frustration. Her blood reports showed excessive inflammation, low iron and ferritin levels, and low vitamin D, causing restlessness, low energy, and feeling drained quickly after any task. Hence, she was looking for sustainable change and lifestyle tips that would help her lose weight and give her the energy to handle all her responsibilities easily.

We analysed that she consumed foods devoid of good fats, believing it was healthy. Most of her diet consisted of low-calorie small meals and quick-digesting, such as poha, upma, rice and dhal, roti sabzi, etc. These foods caused inflammation and nutritional deficiencies, contributing to her low energy throughout the day, fatigue, aches and pains, which led to no teas, disturbed food patterns and disrupted sleep.  We first eliminated her nutrient deficiencies such as b12, vitamin D, and iron through supplementation and quality foods. We included a balanced diet consisting of whole foods at home, cell wall intact carbs, foods with soluble fibre, adequate protein, and good fats to keep her full for 3-4 hours after every meal. A couple of coaching sessions were conducted to educate her about the functioning of the body and how the body needs time to detox and recover, as weight loss is one aspect of health. Still, we also had to work on reducing her inflammation, improving her overall inner health and helping her lose weight. We ensured the meal plans were manageable within the context of her family responsibilities, work schedule, and childcare needs. Since she was accustomed to fasting, we gave her a personalised meal plan and guidelines. These guidelines ensured she fasted in a way that facilitated detoxification and auto phage without compromising her energy levels. She could even manage her daily activities easily during fasting days. Iron-rich recipes such as beetroot hummus, green leafy rotis, salads and soups were included to meet her fibre needs. Good quality efficient protein such as homemade paneer, mutton, and protein shakes were incorporated. Low glycemic index fruits were suggested to manage her glucose spikes and energy levels. Good healthy fats in the form of ghee, dates, nuts and seeds were incorporated for optimum hormone and brain functioning. Continuous monitoring and support were given for ease in her journey.

 



Results: Within a month, she lost 4 kgs without feeling deprived. Her sleep improved, and now she won't get up every couple of hours in between and have quality sleep. Within three months, she achieved a remarkable weight loss of 10 kg, which was particularly impressive considering her initial bloodwork. This was the first time she had lost such a significant amount of weight in her adult life. Now, she can consistently maintain her weight and enjoys improved health overall, all without sacrificing time for her family, work, or other responsibilities.
