You might gain weight instead of losing weight by following fad diets.

CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Namitha

Gender: Female

BMI: 29.4 (obese grade-2)

Location: Hyderabad

Case history: Namitha is a 36-year-old pilot. She was suffering from uterine fibroids, which led to severe weight gain. She was very conscious about her weight gain and desperately wanted to lose the extra kilos. She tried various methods like intermittent fasting, a 12-14 starvation period daily and other fad diets. She would often sleep hungry. She would crave late at night, which made her intermittent fasting unsustainable. As she had varied sleep schedules due to her profession, she would end up snacking during the flights and having heavy meals after the flight, making her feel low on energy and lethargic. Her relationship with food gradually becomes unlikable and worse. She also sought the advice of other nutritionists and dieticians to improve her health and lose weight, but she ended up starving and, after that, ate heavy meals, leading to 10 kg of weight gain over time. She was not able to follow sustainably. She approached us to achieve a healthy and sustainable lifestyle and learn mindful eating practices.

Approach by the best nutritionist/dietician in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, Deepika Chalasani:

After analysing her food diary and lifestyle, we saw that her meals were quite unpredictable and inconsistent as a result of her profession. We recognised that she was a hyperplastic body type. She has various dietary aversions. So, we created meal plans for her, keeping all of these factors and her forthcoming schedules in mind. We had to make different meal plans which supported her varied schedules and the food choices available for her, viz. travel locations, flight duration, flight time (whether it was an all-night flight, early morning flight, layover and when she was at home. We concentrated on including efficient protein-rich foods in her meal plans since her diet was deficient in optimum protein. We incorporated whole dals, eggs, hung curd, fish (while travelling) and small portions of homemade paneer in her meals. We also concentrated on providing her with adequate complex carbs in the form of whole grains such as quinoa, millet, and shvasa's green rotis to meet her fibre needs and ensure satiety. Her occupation requires a high level of attention, so we incorporated foods such as fruits such as bananas and dried fruits such as prunes and dates because glucose is the primary fuel for the brain. We also incorporated healthy fats like nuts, dates, and super-seeds marmalade from Shvasa, guacamole, etc. Furthermore, we kept the carbohydrate-to-protein-to-fat ratio at 48:16:36.

She was travelling for almost 20 days in a month. To ensure she consumes a dean quate protein, we gave her a customised protein shake, yoghurt, fruit yoghurt eggs and fish. We made sure to include easy-to-carry, one-pot meals, and we also assisted her with choosing what to eat in her layovers according to the food availability. During her late-night shifts, we recommended gut-friendly, nutrient-dense meals such as steamed vegetables and rice bowls with eggs, fish or tofu. When she stayed home, we gave her green rotis, homemade paneer, and seitan. We also ensured she had enough fibre and gave her various salad options like Greek salad, Navrathan salad, and Mediterranean salad. We made sure we gave her fun snacks like Shvasa's protein nachos and hummus with vegetable sticks as she enjoyed her teatime meal.

We discovered that she had an aggressive eating pattern. She used to feel guilty when she ate food and later punished herself by starving to make sure she wouldn't gain weight. To get her out of that rut, we counselled and educated her on the importance of mindful eating, such as eating with good intentions and joy, practising guilt-free eating and healthy portion control, and advised her to eat her favourite foods during optimal metabolic functioning states to ensure she enjoyed her favourites and still lost weight. We also focused on improving her lifestyle by suggesting an exercise regimen she could do at home and in hotels while travelling.

Result:

Despite her erratic work schedules, Namitha dropped 5kgs in 3 months despite eating more, with our meal plans and guidance. She dropped by two sizes. Her stomach and bloating problems were cured after only two weeks of following the meal recommendations. Her energy levels improved. She enjoyed eating without guilt and liked food items she had previously detested, such as paneer. She recently went on a trip to Bali and ate a variety of foods, including sweets, desserts, and fried foods. She also enjoyed her alcohol, but she didn't gain any weight because she was used to mindful eating techniques. She was overjoyed with the outcomes of her weight loss and developing a healthy relationship with food.
