You can enjoy sustainable postpartum weight loss as a working mother of a toddler living in the USA

CASE STUDY &SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Sonali

Gender: Female

BMI: 28.9 (overweight)

Location: Texas, USA

Case history: Sonali, a working mother living abroad, has continuously tried to lose weight for 2 years after delivering her baby. She noticed a drastic weight gain of 7 kgs in the past seven months and needed help to lose weight. She tried various diet techniques given by dieticians but was finding it hard to follow their diet plans as it was too time-consuming, which did not allow her to spend time with her daughter. She also followed an eating pattern as per her knowledge but was not able to lose weight and would end up having cravings late in the evening, which caused her to gain weight. She was worried that she would gain more weight in the coming months due to the festival and holiday season. She was looking for a combination of Indian meals and a variety of options in her meal plans, along with receiving appropriate food and nutrition knowledge to make informed and mindful food choices.

Approach by the best nutritionist/dietician in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, Deepika Chalasani:

After having a detailed consult with her and analysing her food pattern, we saw that she has been following almost the same eating pattern she used to follow during her pregnancy and post-delivery. Furthermore, her meals were not planned, so she ended up eating the food available at home when she felt hungry. Also, since her meal timings were off and many of her food choices were quick fixes such as dhal rice, bread and peanut butter, poha, khichadi, etc., it caused her bloating and cravings in the evenings. Her meals were calorie-dense with excess fat. Her diet lacked variety because she was unaware of including enough healthy options. Her diet had no optimum protein, leading to frequent hunger pangs and cravings. Before her pregnancy, she habitually exercised and followed calorie deficit. After that, her body underwent drastic physiological change in the past two years and faced hectic schedules with the baby. She had low energy due to inappropriate food choices and was unable to manage and keep up with the changes in her lifestyle and routine, which led to poor eating patterns. Hence, we provided her with a personalised meal plan suitable to her body type, health goal and lifestyle in the USA. We helped her plan her meal day with cooking options that were complete and balanced. We took care of her work schedule and meal timings. Frequent meals with appropriate protein and complex carbs were suggested to meet her fibre and micronutrient requirements. We told her anti-inflammatory foods, which were palate-friendly and suitable for her taste buds. Since she has faced varied phases in her life along with too many experiments with food, we provided a light, easy-to-follow, and sustainable meal plan and guidelines on lifestyle movements that she can follow at home and adopt long-term. Accurate time monitoring and support were provided. Meal-prepping tips and recipes were suggested so that she could follow the plan quickly and comfortably and avoid skipping meals. We helped her choose the best foods from the menu when she ate out. We adjusted and suggested replacements during different occasions such as festivals, social gatherings, celebrations and travelling.

With our constant support and nutrition coaching on mindfulness techniques, she lost 8 kgs in 4 months. She also noticed an inch loss. She lost weight despite travelling on several weekends for leisure and enjoying the festival season in the USA, including Ganesh Chaturthi, Dusshera, Halloween, and Diwali. She travelled to India and could enjoy all her favourite sweet foods at her sister’s wedding with the mindful eating techniques taught to her. She was happy she had come down by two sizes before her sister’s wedding and got to her ideal weight. Her energy levels increased. She no longer faces hunger pangs. Her washroom cycles and digestion got better. She can now manage her foods while travelling and indulge in pleasure foods guilt-free, sustaining her improved health.
