Case Study
Rahul Singh, a 46-year-old professional in the recruitment industry, had recently undergone heart bypass surgery and was currently taking blood thinners, statins, and other medications to manage his heart rate and alleviate pain. His erratic work schedule often had him working until 5 a.m., after which he typically had breakfast and slept until lunchtime. This routine negatively affected his metabolism and overall lifestyle. Rahul was classified as heterotrophically obese, with a BMI of 30.73 kg/m². His recent blood work indicated that he was prediabetic, with elevated triglyceride and VLDL levels. Additionally, his liver function tests showed elevated liver enzymes. As a result, he sought a diet plan to help reduce 20 kgs of weight with minimal activity as he had just recently undergone bypass surgery and effectively managed both his cardiac health and overall well-being.
Approach by the Best Nutritionist in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, Deepika Chalasani:
To improve Rahul’s health, we adopted a gradual and thoughtful approach to modifying his dietary habits, taking into account his work schedule and health conditions. To help him meet his daily protein requirements while managing his weight, we incorporated high-quality protein sources such as egg whites, chicken, fish, and whole legumes/lentils such as moong dal, and black-eyed peas. This selection not only provided essential nutrients but also supported his overall well-being and weight management goals.
We included complex carbohydrates such as bajra which is a heart friendly millet and given the fact that he came to us during winters and Bangalore generally has pleasant and moderately cold temperatures , ragi roti, and quinoa in Rahul's diet to help manage his blood sugar levels and support his weight loss goals. Additionally, we educated him on selecting fruits with a low glycaemic index like apple, papaya, muskmelon, berries, pomegranate, pear, and dragon fruit, which would prevent spikes in his blood sugar compared to those with a high glycaemic index. We also included vegetable salad in Rahul's diet to boost his fiber intake. This addition not only helped him manage his weight but also provided a sense of fullness and assisted in regulating his post-lunch blood sugar levels. This approach aimed to provide him with sustained energy while promoting better metabolic control and overall health.
Considering his schedule, we offered Rahul convenient post-dinner and late-night meal options such as whole dhal chaat, 10 soaked almonds, a cube or slice of cheese, or a glass of weak buttermilk. These choices were designed to provide him with nutritious alternatives that would satisfy his hunger without leading to poor food selections. By having these healthy options readily available, we aimed to support his dietary goals while accommodating his lifestyle.
We also emphasized the importance of hydration, advising him to drink at least 3-3.5litres of water daily, and encouraging him to sip a glass every hour. Additionally, we recommended maintaining a gap of 3 – 3.5 hours between meals. We guided him to limit his egg consumption to 1 whole egg and two egg whites per day, and on days when he didn’t have eggs for breakfast, we suggested opting for homemade paneer made from 2% fat milk. We encouraged him to do lifestyle movements of 10000 steps a day and 45 minutes of brisk walking and asked him to ensure that his rate was in the fat-burning zone.
Despite his erratic work schedule, Rahul successfully adhered to his diet plan and allowed himself to enjoy parathas and samosas once a week. We provided him with ongoing support and guidance to help him stay on track and achieve his health goals. This balanced approach ensured that he could indulge occasionally without compromising his overall progress.

Results:
As Rahul diligently followed his diet, he experienced a remarkable transformation in both his weight and measurements, losing weight from 100 kg to 79.5 kg, in 6 months despite travelling for work and pleasure. He has been able to maintain his weight loss for over a year now. As he was on a fat loss program, he saw a considerable reduction in his belly fat and also was energized and alert throughout the day. Additionally, his cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and liver enzymes showed improvement. Rahul became more mindful of his food choices, allowing him to indulge in his favourite foods while being conscious of the right portions and timing. This mindful approach not only supported his health goals but also helped him maintain stable blood sugar levels.
