CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES
Name:Indrani & Shankar
Age: 40 & 44 years
Location: Nizampet
Case History: A couple, Indrani and Shankar, approached us seeking a holistic diet plan. Indrani, a 40-year-old female, had been diagnosed with stage 3 Chondromalacia Patella and her patella's movements were limited due to a disability in her leg.. Her blood reports revealed hidden diabetes, indicated by high fasting blood sugar levels, along with hypertrophic obesity. She also had elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and Eosinophil Sedimentation Rate (ESR), signaling inflammation. Additionally, her reports showed low levels of RBCs and hemoglobin, indicating anemia, as well as high triglycerides, low HDL, and high VLDL, suggesting a risk of arteriosclerosis. Indira was also on medication for hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and osteoporosis. She sought a diet plan to help reduce her weight and manage her blood parameters.Shankar, a 44-year-old male with a history of hypertension for which he was on medication, had blood reports indicating vitamin D insufficiency and a high white blood cell count suggestive of inflammation. His reports also showed elevated SGOT and SGPT levels, indicating fatty liver, as well as an underactive thyroid, evidenced by high-normal TSH levels. Additionally, he had elevated urea and high-normal blood urea nitrogen levels. He sought a plan to improve his gut health, reduce belly fat, weight, and manage his blood parameters.
Approach by the best nutritionist, dietician in Hyderabad, Telangana, India Deepika Chalasani:
As a couple, Indrani and Shankar wanted to embark on their nutritional journey together. It was crucial for us to address their distinct medical conditions while creating a unified dietary plan, ensuring it was manageable and sustainable for the long term without two different food options as it would become unwieldy and cumbersome to manage.During the dietary recall assessment, we noted a lack of diversity in Indrani and Shankar's diet. They often consumed the same food items for dinner as they did for lunch. Their diet was found to be low in fiber, probiotics, high-quality protein, and healthy fats. Given Shankar's hypertension, it was advised that he avoid starting his day with a cup of coffee on an empty stomach, as this could potentially increase his blood pressure levels.
To cater to their specific dietary requirements, we ensured that they incorporated high-quality protein sources such as eggs, fish, sprouts, and unsweetened curd or yogurt. This helped promote satiety and manage weight effectively. For Shankar, to regulate his blood pressure, we advised limiting his tea or coffee intake to once a day and avoiding it on an empty stomach. We included a variety of fresh fruits such as berries, papaya, guava, apple, pomegranate, kiwi, dragon fruit, and pear in their diet to ensure an adequate intake of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, we introduced complex carbohydrates like a variety of millets, green roti, and hand-pounded rice, along with a generous serving of cooked vegetables in innovative ways, to fulfill their fiber and micronutrient needs, supporting their overall health goals. To prevent hunger pangs in the evening, we suggested healthy snack options like murukku and date cubes, providing them with structured guidelines and meal plans for optimal food selection.
They were encouraged to begin their day with 1-2 glasses of warm water and to maintain hydration by drinking a glass of water every hour, recognizing the importance of water for good metabolism. To promote health, we advised preparing vegetables and curries in cold pressed peanut oil, using fewer spices, and avoiding deep-frying. Furthermore, we suggested a suitable exercise regimen for them like walking to gradually integrate into their daily routine. Throughout the process, they received ongoing monitoring and guidance.
Results:
Within just five months of following the plan, there were significant improvements in Indrani's health parameters and blood reports. Her weight decreased from 77 kg to 71 kg despite being handicapped and not able to do much of lifestyle movements, and her BMI dropped from 31.2 kg/m² to 29.0 kg/m², moving her out of the obesity category into the overweight range, which is beneficial for her overall health. Additionally, her body composition analysis showed notable progress:her subcutaneous fat reduced from 37.10% to 34.90%. Importantly, her visceral fat dropped from 13.5% to 10%, which is particularly significant because high visceral fat is associated with an increased risk of conditions such as diabetes, prediabetes, and heart disease. Another positive change was the reduction in her body age from 60 years to 57 years, indicating a clear trend towards better health and longevity.
Shankar experienced notable health improvements within five months of adhering to the plan. His weight decreased from 89 kg to 79 kg, resulting in a drop in BMI from 26 kg/m² to 23.9 kg/m², transitioning him from the overweight category to a healthier weight range. This reduction in BMI is crucial for lowering the risk of various health issues, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. Moreover, his body composition analysis revealed positive changes. His body fat percentage decreased from 32.7% to 26.9%, indicating a loss of excess fat, which contributes to better overall health and a reduced risk of obesity-related conditions. Similarly, his subcutaneous fat decreased from 22.60% to 18.30%, Significantly, his visceral fat decreased from 14.5% to 9.5%. This is particularly noteworthy as visceral fat is the fat stored around the internal organs, and its reduction is associated with a decreased risk of serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Additionally, his body age decreased from 53 years to 48 years, a clear indication of improved physiological health and vitality. A lower body age suggests that his biological health is better aligned with that of a younger person, reflecting the positive impact of the health plan on his overall well-being.
For both Indrani and Shankar, their motion cycle improved significantly, and they felt more energetic compared to before. Additionally, their hunger pangs decreased. These positive changes occurred by following a diet plan consisting of homemade and natural foods, supplemented with essential nutrients such as collagen and Vitamin B complex for enhanced health.
