Case History:Deepa, a software engineer, had early stage achalasia. She had a procedure done which improved her condition, but she still wasfacing a lot of digestive health issues such as acidity, acid reflux while sleeping and bloating after meals. Due to the discomfort, she had lot of sleepless nights and felt heavy on waking up in the morning. She used to get acid reflux and regurgitation whenever she consumed spicy foods. She also felt bloated after her meals. Disturbed sleep would make her lethargic next morning and therefore hindering her work out regimen. She stopped exercising due to low energy levels and digestive health issues and in the process gained 15 pounds. She found it difficult to manage it with work schedules, digestive discomfort, meal preparation and ended up binge eating, felt lethargic, fatigue and got mood swings throughout the day. She was looking for easy to follow diet which aligned with her lifestyle and health issues, appropriate to her workout regime which also helps her eliminate her acidity issues and achieve overall health.

By analyzing her food diary, we saw that her meal timings were random, irregular. Her meals were gas producing in nature especially the dinners. She was having wrong foods at wrong timings such as eating raw foods in the late evening. She had too much or too little gap between meals. All of these lead to gut issues like acid reflux, bloating and heaviness. It also causing low energy levels throughout the day. The foods she ate were giving insulin spikes leading to energy imbalance and mood swings. As she was unable to manage her food with her hectic work schedules and personal life, her eating habits became erratic having more of simple carbs, inadequate proteins and poor micronutrient sources. Her exercise regime was also haywire. She did at high intensity with imbalance in pre and post workout food causing higher loss of glycogen in the body which lead to dips in energy levels and hence constant nibbling and eating more simple carbs. We started by correcting her vitamin D and B12 levels through foods and supplements to ease her nutrition journey. We ensured that she follows a regular meal timing to balance her biological clock and gut health. Elimination of trigger foods and acidic foods were done. We introduced more of alkaline foods in order to manage the acid reflux. We asked her to take it easy while exercising and to do at low intensity initially. We suggested softer protein source and asked her to finish dinner early and maintain a gap of at least 3 hours to avoid the heaviness post eating and to get a sound sleep. Optimum protein with a good amino acid profile were provided such as eggs, hung curd, chicken, fish, hemp milk which helped feel full, satisfied post meals and reduced her hunger pangs. Good quality complex carb rich foods having fiber, good fats and vitamins were given such as quinoa, oats, superseeds, ragi, rajma, etc. Foods were suggested as per tolerance levels and digestibility. Prebiotics and probiotics were given along with maintaining diet diversity to help her improve the microbiome and gut health. We suggested her an appropriate workout regime which fits the best with her meals and health goals. Continuous support and guidance was provided.
With our guidance and nutrition support, she is now able to get sound sleep without any acid reflux at night. She does not feel bloated after meals.. She is able to manage her work along with food and exercise. We taught her meal prepping which helped her manage meals and work schedule. Her acidity reduced significantly and was able to enjoy pleasure meals and occasional alcohol without any disruption. Her energy levels and washroom cycles improved. She no longer faces mood swings.
