You can take charge of your acidity & bloating with balanced nutrition says best online nutritionist

Name: Tejaswi

Age: 31 years

Gender: Female

BMI: 22.6 kg/m2

Case History: Tejaswi approached us with problems of gastritis. Her gastritis condition was severe where she would frequently get acidic if she delayed her meal by even 15 to 20 minutes and when she ate food she would feel bloated. This restricted her movements and she would constantly be worried about going out of the home for daily chores or travel out of town. Her BMI was within normal range and she also had a history of PCOS. She had discomfort throughout the day. She was also frustrated as she did not know the causes behind the constant acidity, burning sensation and bloating issues. Further she suffered from constipation as a result of food choices that she was making.

Analysis: Past history, dietary recall and lifestyle choices. Her liver parameters were fine while Vitamin D and B12 levels were low.

Approach by best gut health nutritionist / dietician: We analyzed her food diary and saw that she was eating quick digesting food which had refined carbs that would digest quickly (in about 1 to 2 hours) and therefore send her body into a starving mode and led to acidity. She consumed less amount of food as she used to feel heavy after each meal. To avoid the body getting into starvation mode, we introduced wholesome food with sufficient proteins and fats in her diet and eliminated all the potentially gassy foods like dhals which could cause gas. We included softer and high soluble fibers to provide relief to her stomach and made sure that the portions were enough and were not too much for her. As she was deficient in B12 and vit D, her body was not absorbing the nutrients, and since she is a vegetarian, we gave her food rich in b12 along with probiotic like curd in her diet and added b12 and vit d supplements to her diet along the way. We also monitored her water intake and exercise regimen on routine basis in order to improve her digestive health with better absorption. Since she had a history of PCOS, she was very clear that she did not want to gain weight and did not want to lose weight either, as she would look very lean and hence we gave her a meal program that was in the weight maintenance mode. As a part of the blood report analysis, we also observed that she was slowly inching towards an insulin resistance condition as she had PCOS history. Therefore, we also ensured that we gave her a meal plan that proactively reversed these condition. Since she was suffering from constipation, we tracked and monitored her water and fiber intake on routine basis and made sure that it was adequate enough to provide relief from constipation.

Results: After making lifestyle changes, in the first 2 weeks, she could observe that her bloating reduced to a great extent. Since she suffered with acidity for quite a long time and was afraid of getting acidity if she did not eat at frequent intervals, we gave 3 large meals and 2 snacks. As she got more comfortable with the program, we eliminated the 2 snacks thus, allowing the body to rest between the meals and to heal the gut. She observed that she felt more energetic and she did not get any acidity episode even though she missed small snacks in between. Due to high soluble fibers and increased water intake her constipation got cured as her peristalsis movement improved. Initially though she saw benefits with the program, she was unhappy as we had limited her food choices with an objective to understand her trigger foods. Over a period of time, we introduced all her favorite and familiar foods in a phased manner. As her gut is started healing, she was able to eat many foods that she could not tolerate earlier. Her gastritis episodes have disappeared even though she delays her meals. She became more aware about the foods that she should include in her daily diet which would not lead to any gastric issues. After following the diet thoroughly, her overall gastric issues including acidity, constipation and bloating got cured and she started feeling much lighter and better than ever.
