Sustainable weight loss is possible while managing other priorities in life.

Name: Sujana M.

Age: 46 years

BMI: 28.5

Gender: Female, Hyderabad

Case History: Sujana, a mother of three, is 46 years old. She has been taking medicine for her asthma for the past 20 years. She experiences severe asthmatic symptoms on and off. She started gaining weight after her last pregnancy and has been trying to lose weight. All the weight loss approaches in the past were not sustainable as she would lose weight during the program and gain it back. She also found the regimen monotonous, restrictive and sometimes too regimented and therefore was not able to sustain it in the long term. Furthermore, her blood test results revealed that she had nutritional deficiencies such as low iron, ferritin, vitamin b12 and over-the-range LDL cholesterol.

Approach by the best clinical nutritionist: We started by ensuring the sustainability of the program by keeping all the food that has been prepared at her home relevant to her outcome in the program. Additionally, we included food that was rich in vitamins which is very important for protein digestibility, hair & skin and long-term good health. In order to increase her ferritin levels we offered her animal protein on days when she was a non-vegetarian, which contains absorbable iron. We restricted her dairy consumption because it can aggravate asthma symptoms. Soy isolate and tofu were suggested to her to take care of her ferritin deficiency and protein requirements and reduce her cravings. Additionally, foods high in micronutrients were included to aid in the reduction of her hair loss. Her diet was carefully planned with the right ratio of macronutrients and fibre-rich meals to support metabolic flexibility. The meals were modified in accordance with her exercise schedule as well. She was also given healthy alternatives while travelling and methods to enjoy her party and marriage food to ensure sustainable weight loss and proper cooking techniques, to preserve the nutrients of the food. We gave her advice on how to wisely eat her comfort food favourites.

In just 5 months, 10 kg of weight was lost. She saw a significant change in her lifestyle and mood swings. Her cravings subsided. She no longer felt fatigued and overall and her energy levels increased. Her constipation and digestive problems were fixed. She had a drop in her cholesterol from 142 mg/dl to 99 mg/dl. She was able to maintain her weight loss while ensuring her comfort food, travelling and attending marriages and parties.
