Personalized meal plan can reduce various fatty liver complications and improve productivity

CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Krishna M

Age: 34

BMI: 22 kg/m2

Profession- Marketing executive in the medical equipment industry

Case history: Krishna suffered from severe acidity, bloating, and indigestion. He would wake up in the morning with severe acidity and suffer from at least 1 episode of vomiting. He had a constant feeling of nausea and was quite fatigued and exhausted. His doctor gave him medications to lessen his acidity. His SGPT was 53.35 U/L indicating fatty liver and other liver enzymes slightly over the healthy range.

Analysis by the best dietitian in Hyderabad, Telangana, India: Specific blood tests and analysis of his dietary and lifestyle choices demonstrated that he was severely Vitamin D deficient and had high fatty liver components.

Approach by the best dietitian in Telangana: We asked him to start with vitamin D supplementation as it was impairing the gut health which further aggravated bloating and indigestion. Krishna is a marketing executive in the medical equipment industry and requires to travel 20 to 25 days a month. So on most days, there is an unpredictable food intake in terms of timing and availability. This would lead to acid build up in the body, tiredness, fatigue, nausea, and would continue in the night. He would feel uneasy at night and wake up in the morning to a vomiting episode and the cycle would continue. We advised him to immediately stop foods that caused acidity like gluten and foods that minimized absorption of nutrients, such as tea and coffee. He would resort to multiple no. of teas/coffees to manage his hunger levels on travel days which further aggravated the acidity episodes. The first goal was to help him plan his meals before traveling. We helped him plan his travel trips in advance by carrying on-the-go foods that supported his liver health and gut health. We asked him to carry buttermilk from the hotel, coconut water tetra packs, fruits like bananas/apples that were easy to carry, soaked almonds, and 1 packed meal from the hotel he was staying like poha. We also asked him to carry a slice of cheese to reduce his hunger levels and calm his gut. All these on-the-go options were to ensure he eats on time till he is able to have his main meals like lunch and dinner as the timing was unpredictable. We kept a check on the time interval between each meal so that there is no overdose of snacking. For his fatty liver, we gave him good fats like almonds which are stomach-friendly and low in fats, and also ensured the entire day’s consumption of fat was a maximum of 30%. We helped him choose appropriate food options from the restaurant menu to ensure no acidity episodes during the day. This helped him sleep well and stop the early morning puking episode. As his acidity got better and all the stomach discomfort reduced, we gave him meal plans to support his favorite foods and brought back gluten into his daily consumption as he was missing his sandwiches and rotis.

Result: Within the first two weeks, Krishna’s acidity levels reduced and were under control and his morning vomiting episodes stopped. His doctor had suggested antacid medications and medications to reduce his liver enzymes. He however was not comfortable taking them. After 60 days of following our program, we asked him to retest his liver parameters. He was happy that all his liver parameters got back to the range. He does not require to take any other medications, and his condition has gotten better. He is back to his earlier productive self without any episodes of burping, belching, bloating, or acidity. He is happy today than he was before, he feels more energized and can focus more on his work.
