CASE STUDY & SUCCESS STORIES

Name: Vidhya and Sanjay

Age: 30 & 40 years

Location: Hyderabad

Case History: Vidhya, a 30-year-old IT professional, was diagnosed with hypertrophic obesity and latent diabetes. Her blood work indicated a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, evidenced by high-normal LDL levels. She was also found to have low iron and ferritin levels, alongside hypothyroidism, as indicated by elevated TSH levels. Additionally, her blood reports revealed elevated hs-CRP levels, suggestive of inflammation. Consequently, she sought a comprehensive plan to reduce weight, enhance physical activity, manage her blood parameters, and control her food cravings.

Vidhya's husband Sanjay, a 40-year-old IT professional, was also diagnosed with hypertrophic obesity and found to be at risk of developing cardiovascular disease, as evidenced by high LDL levels. His blood reports revealed insufficient vitamin B12 and D levels, necessitating improvement. He sought a diet plan to lose at least 10 kg, manage his blood parameters, and enhance his physical activity.

Approach by the best nutritionist/dietician in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, Deepika Chalasani:

Vidhya and her husband, each with specific medical conditions, wanted to start their nutrition program simultaneously. Addressing their health needs without creating separate meal plans would be crucial, but it would be challenging to manage long-term, especially with two children. Therefore, we designed a meal plan in which both commonly liked 80% of the food items, with portions tailored to their individual blood reports. The remaining 20% of the meal plan included their personal preferences, ensuring a balanced and manageable diet for both.

After analysing their dietary recall and lifestyle, it was observed that their meals were carbohydrate-heavy, and they engaged in minimal physical activity throughout the day, leading to an imbalance in calorie intake and expenditure, likely contributing to their weight gain. Their diet was low in complex carbohydrates, adequate protein, fibre, probiotics, and prebiotics. Since both consumed the same meals, we meticulously crafted a customised plan for them, making minor adjustments to ensure easy adaptation and adherence. The plan was tailored to meet their specific dietary needs and health conditions.

We ensured they received high-quality protein sources such as homemade paneer, tofu, Greek yoghurt, and personalised protein powder to address their needs. We incorporated complex carbohydrates like green roti, a signature product from Shvasa, hand-pounded rice, quinoa, millets, and ample cooked vegetables in innovative forms to meet their dietary fibre and micronutrient requirements, supporting their health goals. We included a super seed mix and fresh fruit and hung curd or Greek yoghurt to provide good fats, dietary fibre, and probiotics. Additionally, we provided healthy snack options such as vegan nachos and date seed cubes, a signature product from Shvasa to prevent hunger pangs. We included regular coffee in the evening as they are coffee lovers and enjoyed their coffee. Structured guidelines and plans for food selection when eating out and travelling were also offered to support their adherence to the program.

We also educated them on the importance of water for boosting metabolism and promoting fat mobilisation, advising them to start with a glass of water every 60 minutes. Additionally, we recommended a suitable exercise regime for them to gradually incorporate into their routine, such as walking, cardio, and strength training. We provided continued monitoring and guidance to ensure their progress and adherence.

Results:

Within six months of following the plan, Vidhya and Sanjay experienced significant improvements in their health parameters and blood reports. Vidhya's weight decreased from 76 kg to 68 kg, and her LDL levels improved from 128 mg/dL to 114 mg/dL. Her HbA1c level decreased from 5.6% to 5.4%, and her thyroid function showed improvement, with TSH levels decreasing from 4.84 ng/mL to 3.90 ng/mL.

Sanjay's weight decreased from 86 kg to 78 kg. His HbA1c levels improved from 5.4% to 4.9%, and his fasting blood glucose levels improved from 111.5 mg/dL to 106 mg/dL. His LDL levels reduced from 135 mg/dL to 124 mg/dL, and his HDL levels increased from 31.7 mg/dL to 35 mg/dL. His vitamin B12 levels improved from 200 pg/mL to 300 pg/mL, and his vitamin D levels increased from 22.90 ng/mL to 82.24 ng/mL.

As a couple, both Vidhya and Sanjay began focusing more on physical activity and experienced reduced cravings compared to before. They both started feeling more energetic and confident, which also helped them make brighter and healthier choices for their children. They are now able to manage their health with natural and homemade food.
