From the demands of maternity — dealing with postpartum recovery and sleepless nights — to managing the continuous responsibilities of motherhood along with professional commitments, mothers often find little time left for themselves. This relentless pace without adequate self-care can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and unseen health conditions like high blood pressure, predisposition to type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and many more.


When mothers neglect their health, the consequences extend beyond their well-being, often creating dysfunctional dynamics within the family. Stress and irritability can come from health issues like hormonal imbalances, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, PCOS, hypothyroidism, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and high cholesterol can disrupt family harmony and affect emotional well-being at home.

This often leads to compromised dietary choices, such as the frequent ordering of takeout or opting for unhealthy foods, which can further affect the family's health, contributing to low immunity and even behavioural issues like ADHD in children. Finally, these habits can disrupt family connections and worsen the cycle of neglecting health.


Nourishing the Body and Mind: Steps to Prioritize Overall Wellbeing

This Mother’s Day let's empower moms to prioritize their well-being. Here are some practical steps to get started:


· Fuel Your Body: Eating nutritious meals is critical for energy levels and overall health. Prioritize whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and efficient protein. Plan meals and involve the family in healthy cooking!


· Move Your Body: Exercise is a powerful stress reliever and mood booster. Even a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a dance break can make a difference.


· Sleep is Sacred: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine and create a sleep-conducive environment. Vitamin deficiencies can also cause sleeplessness, it is essential to keep a check on your vitamin levels and take supplements if required.


· Hydration Matters: Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased cognitive function. Aim for eight glasses of water daily and include hydrating fruits and vegetables like cucumber and watermelon.


· Focus on Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help manage stress and anxiety. Encourage family mindfulness practices, even if it's just a few minutes of quiet reflection each day. Your food choices also contribute to your mood swings. Make sure you’re eating mindfully to live a healthy lifestyle.


· Embrace "Me-Time": Schedule time for yourself, even if it's just 30 minutes. This could be reading a book, or pursuing a hobby. Don't feel guilty – this "selfishness" will make you a better mom in the long run.


· Seek Support: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether it's from your partner, family, friends, or a healthcare professional, having a support system can help you make healthy choices.


· Prioritize Mental Health: Just like physical health, mental health needs attention too. If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Therapy can be a powerful tool for managing emotions and improving your well-being.
