Insulin dependent Diabetes

Reducing Insulin medications with home foods- By Top Dietitian in Hyderabad

Name: Tv. Chowdhary

Sex: Male

Age: 79

BMI: In range- 23

Diagnosis: Deepika Chalasani, the best nutritionist in Hyderabad, asked the subject for a few specific blood reports to check the health of his heart, liver, and kidneys (high insulin causes damage to all the 3 organs), dietary history and lifestyle choices.

Issue: The subject had undergone a bypass surgery when he was 58 years old and was subsequently diagnosed with diabetes. Over the years his sugar levels kept increasing and so were his medications. As of then, his HbA1c level was 9.5 and he was taking a staggering 90 units of insulin. Since the medications kept increasing, along with several restrictions, he also began to experience panic attacks.

He used to have small, frequent meals; supposedly 8-9 meals a day because he was told that small meals would reduce his sugar levels. Instead, his sugar levels actually went up dangerously. We discovered that his meals were majorly carbohydrate centric in the first half of the day and protein centric later in the day. He was consuming sufficient protein, but the quality and timing of the protein were inappropriate. He constantly felt hungry as he was on a high dose of insulin and was consuming more of hunger generating foods. Additionally, he was having a grain-based diet which he thought was healthy, but we found that it was what caused his insulin levels to spike, thereby increasing his sugar levels, and requiring excessive medication.

Treatment: The diet expert started the treatment that included less insulin generating foods. For e.g., they replaced dals which are a grain-based protein with more efficient protein like fish, lean meat, eggs etc. To reduce the sugar spikes, they gave fruit along with hung curd and seeds in the evening. Also, reduced the number of meals to 4 so that they allowed the body to recycle fat and thereby reduce his insulin resistance.

Results: Within the first 3 days, with the help of best clinical dietitian, the subject eliminated 45 units of fast acting insulin and within 2 weeks he reduced his total insulin to 25 units. Moreover, within 2 months his insulin was down to 15 units and his HbA1C dropped down to 8. He felt more energetic and not to miss, he was also able to enjoy his mangoes the last season. Even with his recent one-week trip to his home town with a fair number of indulgences, his fasting sugar still remained at 120 and his post prandial at 180.
